The
Board of Deacons
,
together with the minister, is responsible for the spiritual
welfare of the Church and the arrangements for all worship
services. The Board takes an active interest in the sick and
the needy and provides for the administration of the
Lord's Supper. It is the Primary Board of Reference for the
Senior Minister.
The
Board of Trustees
serves generally as the financial committee of the Church. The
Board is charged with the support, maintenance, and care of the
property of the Church, including the Church building. Subject
to approval of the Church, the Trustees supervise and authorize
disbursement of funds necessary for the corporate life of the
Church. They are the Primary Board of Reference for all custodial
employees.
The Board of Christian Education
plans and promotes a program of
religious education for all age levels of the Church, determining curricula,
courses, textbooks, and teaching standards. They are responsible for the
allocation and approval of all expenditures for religious education. They are
the Primary Board of Reference for the Director
of Family Ministries.
The Board of Religious Music,
in conference with the Minister of Music, has general oversight of the
choirs and of the music of the church. At this time, that consists of the Chancel
Choir, the Youth Choir, the Handbell Choir, and the Youth Handbell Choir. They
are the Primary Board of Reference for the Minister
of Music.
The Board
of Christian Outreach, with the
minister, provides programs and activities for the Church community, with the
emphasis on human and social needs. Their interest extends from local to national
and world wide issues. The Board has general oversight over Church outreach
programs and encourages Church members to become involved in these programs.
Church Council
The
Church Council
consists of the Moderator,
Vice Moderator, the Chairpersons of each of the above boards, the
president of Women's Fellowship, and three
elected members of the Church.
The purpose of the council is to formulate general Church policies, to
promote harmony between the departments of the Church, to handle
employment relations not otherwise provided for, and to appoint other
special committees not otherwise provided for incident to the working
of the Church. Council Minutes
The Chancel Committee, in consultation with the Minister and the Board of Deacons, is responsible to provide and arrange flowers and/or such other adornment as the Committee may deem appropriiate for Sunday worship services or for special occasions.
The
Nominating Committee
has the continuing responsibility to secure and nominate qualified and
enthusiastic candidates for the various elective offices, boards, and
committees as vacancies occur each year, said nominations to be acted
upon at the Annual Meeting of the Church. The Nominating Committee
shall submit only names of persons who are members of the Church.
Additional nominations may be made from the floor of the Annual Meeting,
but neither these nor any other nominations may be made without prior
consent of the nominees. The Nominating Committee shall place in
nomination twice as many candidates for the Nominating Committee as
there are vacancies to be filled.
The Library Committee is responsible for administration of the Alan Jenkins Library. It is further the responsibility of the committee to have religious information available for all adults, youth and juveniles of the Church. All books added to the Library shall meet with the approval of the Library Committee.
The Memorials and Special Gifts Committee shall receive, control, and disburse specified and unspecified gifts to the Memorials and Special Gifts funds of the Church and make regular reports to the Church Council and an annual report to the Church of its funds and their uses.
The Archives Committee is responsible for updating the existing archives of the Church and to collect, preserve, and maintain the evolving historical records and documents of the Church. Further, the Archives Committee shall establish the kinds of records and materials that shall be permanently retained and shall direct the various organizations of the Church concerning formats for the recording and retension of the ongoing events in the life of the Church.
The Endowment Committee manages the Endowment Fund. The Fund maintains financial support for the general programs of the Church through its income. Income from Fund investments is used for budgeted or special projects of the Church. Money may be withdrawn from the principal of the Fund only by a two-thirds vote of the members of the Church.
The Boy Scout Committee supervises, promotes, and encourages Boy Scout activities as outlined in the Scout manual.
The Budget Committee is appointed by the Church Council. It prepares the budget for the Church for the ensuing year. The budget is then approved by the Board of Trustees and submitted at the Annual Meeting of the Church for adoption.
The Stewardship Committee is appointed by the Church Council. It is charged with devising ways and means for the raising of the funds necessary for the support of the annual Church budget.
The Style and Appropriateness Committee is appointed by the Church Council. It ensures that changes, modifications, additions, and renovations of the Church building, furnishings, and grounds are done in accordance and in harmony with the decorative and aesthetic style of the property.
The Congregational Heritage Committee is appointed by the Church Council. It plans and conducts programs that celebrate the Congregational Way, or celebrate the heritage of our Church. It also maintains and operates the George V. Bohman Center for Congregational Studies and encourages support for the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches, the Michigan Conference of Congregational Christian Churches, and the Southeastern Michigan Association of Congregational Churches.
The Bylaws Comittee is appointed by the Church Council. It maintains the current Bylaws of the Church, as well as drafting new or revised provisions as directed by the Council or as deemed appropriate by a specific board, committee or other Church group or entity. These bylaws are then reviewed by the Council and submitted to the Church an any regular meeting or special meeting called for the purpose of Bylaw consideration.
The Membership Committee is appointed by the Church Council. It reviews the membership status of all members annually, identifying those persons who, because of location, residence, or other circumstance no longer fulfills the covenantal responsibilities of membership.
